Keeping Susan’s name alive—for the long run

Tuesday, April 25, 2017

Susan Zabransky Hughes (or “Susie Hughsie,” as I liked to call her) was a vibrant, beautiful mother, wife, sister, daughter, aunt, and friend who was full of life and laughter. She was fun with a wicked sense of humor. She loved to cook, was a passionate runner, and dedicated many hours volunteering at Pony Power in Mahwah. She lived in Saddle River with her husband Bob and their twins Billy and Ellie, family meant everything to her. On July 18, 2011, despite a courageous fight and aggressive treatment at HackensackUMC, Sue lost her battle with cervical cancer. She was 46 years old.

Our family - especially her parents and husband - wanted to honor her memory in a way that would benefit others. The Zabransky family have been active supporters of HackensackUMC for more than 20 years. Sue’s mom formed the Run for Sue committee to work in conjunction with the Foundation at HackensackUMC. In April of 2012, the inaugural Susan Zabransky Hughes Memorial 5k Run took place in Saddle River. Since its inception, contributors have helped to complete Susan's Suite, a 10-bed unit for patients with cancer and diseases of the immune system in the Emergency Center at HackensackUMC. In that suite, the position of Oncology Patient Navigator was created and funded by our supporters. It’s an amazing legacy!

The sixth annual run will be held on April 29, 2017. This year, funds raised will help fund a scholarship at the new Seton Hall - Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine. Funds will also sponsor two weeks of camp at Pony Power Therapies in Mahwah for patients treated at the Joseph Sanzari Children's Hospital at HackensackUMC. The equine therapy offers pediatric patients and their families the opportunity to engage in beneficial activities related to horses and enjoy time on a farm. Personally, I am both humbled and proud to be a part of this committee who are dedicated to giving back in honor of my friend Sue

Megan Zabransky, cousin of Susan, is an employee of CommandCare, a proud sponsor of the Susan Zabransky Hughes Memorial 5k Run. CommandCare is a leading home healthcare/healthcare staffing agency serving New Jersey.
